Once that part feels normal, front crawl becomes easier to time, breaststroke looks less rushed, and even butterfly stops feeling chaotic.   • Short swim repeats - swim a few easy lengths with a single technical focus: smooth exhale, quiet head, relaxed return to the water. Keep the pace easy enough that the skill stays clean.

I also like using small doses of rest. That breaks the habit of gasping and helps the swimmer feel in control. If you can keep the breathing pattern calm in short repeats, you are much closer to using it in real stroke work.

Common mistakes that turn a simple drill into a struggle

Most problems are not about lung capacity. They are about timing and tension. The swimmer tries to solve a breathing issue by working harder, and that usually makes the water feel more hostile, not less.

The same applies if the swimmer is recovering from illness, feels congested, or has any breathing issue that makes the pool session feel unusual.

  • Keep repetitions short if the face still feels uncomfortable.
  • Use more support, such as the wall or a float, when confidence drops.
  • For children, make it playful and brief rather than competitive.
  • If breathing symptoms are a concern, get qualified advice before progressing.

Good technique should feel repeatable, not dramatic. Once the swimmer can stay calm in short exposures, the next challenge is turning that calm into usable stroke rhythm.

The habit that pays off in the first 10 metres

The swimmers who improve fastest are rarely the ones who can stay down the longest. They are the ones who exhale early, stay loose, and return to the water without hesitation. That habit changes the first 10 metres of every length, because the body enters the stroke already organised instead of reacting late.

If I had to reduce the whole skill to one cue, it would be this: make the water feel ordinary. Once the face is no longer the problem, breathing becomes a timing skill rather than a stress response, and that is when swimming starts to feel efficient instead of effortful.
